About Gaines Day
THE MISSION Raise community awareness, combat senseless violence and to unite urban communities through volunteerism in every county in California.

WHY?  Volunteering is a wonderful way to impact a life at little to no cost to the volunteer.  Volunteering can be done as individually, couple or as a family or a community. Serving together can change the lives of the volunteers as well as those they are serving. Currently there is high anxiety in urban America in regard to public safety, mental health, substance abuse, and even violence.  If you are a victim of a violent crime it seems as if your world has been turned upside down and aside from the judicial system, there is nowhere else to turn for healing.  This is where Mending Wings comes in, they have designed an event that collaborates with the community, businesses, local nonprofit organizations, public and private entities to host Gaines Day which creates rich, meaningful volunteer opportunities that promotes and builds vibrant, strong volunteering communities. Everyone knows someone that has passed away, this event gives them the opportunity to not only volunteer but to honor there departed loved one in a fun family-friendly environment. Mending Wings Inc. has several volunteer groups that meets once per month and go out and volunteer at various organizations. Due to the pandemic there is an urgent need for disaster service workers/volunteers.  Email: Covid-19_Volunteer @MendingWingsInc.org

As a community we have all experienced the loss of a loved one, this event gives the community an opportunity to volunteer and to honor their departed love one in a fun, family-friendly environment.

OUR APPROACH We bring the community together through volunteerism, support and public and private collaboration. Click here for detailed information about our approach.

WHAT TO EXPECT  Expect the community to be excited and full of enthusiasm.

Expect | Fun | Food and Plenty of Entertainment. Anybody can participate and we encourage everyone to dress up, wear their favorite t-shirt or American hero costumes or just wear red, white and or blue. There is a costume competition, dance-off and musical entertainment and plenty of culture food selections.

THE THEME  It’s like 4th of July Mardi Gras and Memorial Day all in one.
Yes! Red, White and Blue and you.

WHERE? The event takes place every year on the third Saturday of August at the Crest Ranch Park in Vallejo, Ca. This will be our fourth-year, last year we had three businesses, twenty-five volunteers and over a hundred participants. We expect twice that amount this year.

HOW?  Planning, Management and Execution
We invite the community to get involved, by volunteering and serving on the planning committee.
We send invitations out months in advance that gives them the opportunity to participate in the planning, management and execution of the event. We encourage:
-- families of fallen loved one – the community -- local businesses – local nonprofits
-- churches  – law enforcement  – public and private entities

They are all given the opportunity to buy a ticket, participate, support, volunteer, get involved and to show that they are a member of the community that will help Gaines Day and its efforts to: raise community awareness, combat senseless violence and to unite urban communities through volunteerism.

WE NEED YOUR HELP  We need volunteers, partnerships, sponsorships, underwriters and of course more community involvement. Currently, the event is coordinated through the efforts of Mending Wings Inc. a community based nonprofit organization whose goal is to enhance and build ongoing relationships between local nonprofits and businesses in their communities to strengthen the sustainability of the nonprofit sector.
